Britain was once known as a nation of builders. Heritage property is important – an Englishman’s home is his castle – but it is being neglected. Too many homes suffer from damp, mould, unsympathetic repairs and basic lack of maintenance.
There’s also a restoration problem, particularly for heritage properties. Old damp proofing methods and new damp proofing methods are often used in combination without considering the knock-on effects this may have.
People with heritage properties should also be aware that traditional crafts are on the decline. A survey by theHeritage Crafts Association found that 54% of people working in the sector feel the skills within their craft are in danger of dying out. Brick making, carpentry, dry stone walling, marquetry and masonry are a few of the heritage skills that are at risk. There are 40 Master Carvers in the whole of the UK – and only one wooden ladder maker (who is sharing his skills online so they don’t die out). There are heritage buildings in need of repair and few with the skills to protect them.
Protect Your Heritage Property
What’s this got to do with us? We believe that it’s important to protect our heritage through maintaining our homes: as William Morris said, ‘Put protection in the place of restoration, to stave off decay by daily care.’
Our products are designed to help you protect your home from damp and rot. Different homes need different treatments and we can explain the products – and lifestyle choices – that will help you treat damp, and keep it at bay.
Some treatments are only suitable for new properties. Others can be used safely in historic buildings – subject to permission for listed buildings. We have provided damp solutions to enough people over the last twenty years to help guide you through. We’ve also got articles explaining the science behind damp (including rising damp) should you wish to understand for yourself.
Solving Damp Problems in Heritage Property
Many damp problems can be solved with ventilation and heat. Others require remedial solutions. We will never recommend a product that we believe will harm your home: and can refer you to experts who can help you find the most appropriate solution.
Home maintenance may not be exciting but a little care goes a long way in protecting your home.
