Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream : Product Overview

Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream : Product Overview

Stormdry Cream

Wet masonry is cold masonry and just as wet clothes feel cold permeable construction materials such as brick, stone, concrete and mortar are worse insulators when they are wet. Cold walls lead to cold buildings as heat escapes much more easily when walls are damp. Stormdry is designed to help you fight penetrating damp, and increase the thermal efficiency of your masonry. It’s scientifically proven to reduce heat loss in single skin masonry construction, leading to an energy saving of up to 29 percent. It also reduces conductive heat loss by a factor of two. You can purchase Stormdry in two sizes: Stormdry 5L and Stormdry 20L.

About Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream

Stormdry is a colourless, breathable, water-repellent treatment that is painted onto masonry. A simple one-coat application will protect brick, stone and concrete from rain penetration for 25 years (verified by the BBA), while still allowing the building to breathe and retain its original looks and features. In addition, Stormdry provides protection against rain penetrating through cracks in the masonry smaller than 0.3mm. Larger cracks should be filled before Stormdry is applied. Poor condition mortar should be repointed using a suitable sand/lime or sand/cement mortar incorporating Stormdry Repointing Additive.

Stormdry Cream Application

Supplied as a deeply penetrating cream, Stormdry is applied to the wall in a single coat using a roller or brush. It should only be applied to dry, porous services that are above-ground, and shouldn’t be applied over sealed or painted surfaces or Lime stone. However, it’s alkali resistant, and can be applied over freshly pointed walls.

How Stormdry Works

Once applied, Stormdry permeates deeply into the masonry before curing to form a water-repellent barrier. This deep penetration improves the effectiveness of treatment by bridging small cracks, which extends the life of the treatment. As Stormdry is formulated to penetrate deeply into masonry, it can take up to two months after application for walls to show a ‘beading effect’ when rainwater strikes the wall. However, Stormdry is rain resistant within a few hours.

Stormdry is typically used to:

  • Protect against penetrating damp
  • Save energy by improving thermal resistance of masonry
  • Maintain thermal properties of cavity wall insulation
  • Improve flood resistance of masonry.(Due to its high vapour permeability, Stormdry allows walls to dry out more quickly after flooding occurs than if they had been treated with conventional coating, allowing an ‘invisible’ flood barrier with minimal disruption)

Stormdry is based on carefully chosen silanes and siloxanes which line the masonry pores to create a water-repellent silicone matrix. By lining pores rather than blocking them, it allows masonry to breathe, and doesn’t suffer from an increased risk of frost damage (spalling). Its unique formulation and deep penetration make it highly resistant to UV light and other forms of degradation, giving it a life-expectancy of 20-30 years.

Stormdry is tested to BS EN ISO 15148:2002 on a wide range of substrates, including brick, mortars, concrete and sandstone. It’s manufactured in the UK under an ISO9001/14001 quality and environmental management system.
